ABSTRACT
This research undertook a quantitative investigation into the existence of inter-professional rivalry among health workers at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, Nigeria. It examines the causes, effects and ways of managing this rivalry using a conceptual model built from the existing literature. The study was cross-sectional with the use of quantitative method. A total of 424 health workers were selected across 7 major health units using a stratified sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to collect data from them. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential analyses. Results indicate that salary structure, doctors’ dominance, blurred job boundaries, value differences and poor communication are the most prominent causes of inter-professional rivalry among healthcare professionals at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). The study suggests some policy measures that will ensure a regular and constant dialogue among the professionals and strengthen teamwork and collaboration.
