ABSTRACT
Many scholars have recently focused on traffic congestion to find a solution and reduce the significant economic losses it causes. In this context, studying the speed and flow characteristics of roads helps to develop ways to manage traffic more efficiently. The main goal of this study is to suggest ideas for traffic improvements in the three selected intersections in Pabna City. The legs of these intersections are composed of both motorized vehicles (Bus, Passenger cars etc.) and non-motorized vehicles (Bicycles, Cycle rickshaws, Carts etc.). A VISSIM model (a traffic microscopic simulation software) is calibrated and validated to build a road network, identify and optimize problems, and visualize the results. Accordingly, this study evaluates the present traffic flow condition, creates signalized intersections on the three existing roundabout intersections, and analyses the congestion costs. The study shows that the developed VISSIM model significantly improves vehicular flows and speeds and reduces the travel time of trip-makers without installing new infrastructure to the existing road capacity. The congestion cost at the developed signalized intersections on the roundabout intersections is reduced by 30% per hour at Pabna-Sujanagar Hwy. It decreases by 31% at Ataikhula road and A. Hamid Road by 24% per hour.
